With collections spanning from the neo-gothic to the dragonfly-adourned, the Romanian Designers proved that their country’s oeuvre is much more than Gypsies and post-communist revival. Particularly notable were Lucian Broscatean and Lena Criveanu’s collections.
Broscatean seemed to play with this iron-curtain stereotype in his all-black collection—save one somewhat incongruous neon-orange piece. Black head wraps gave a nun-like, oppressive feel to the models. The asymmetrically draped and layered wraps recall an Ottoman aesthetic yet feel more downtown New York than Eastern Europe.
Criveanu’s collection was tonally opposite with creams, whites, and silvers taking the fore. Flowing dresses and jumpsuits were crafted in satin-silk and sheer fabrics. While the latter was a somewhat ubiquitous feature of this weeks collections, Criveanu’s use of intricately detailed leotards with lace appliqué made the looks wearable where others had been rather too revealing.
