golden era grandeur

guido maria kretschmer s/s 11

I’m a fan of Kretschmer’s 1940′s boardwalk glamour. The season’s looks had the expected touch of grandeur and over-the-top confection that characterise the meticulous designer. Some of the more delicate, subtle looks reminded me of Armani’s classic women suits: feminine, powerful, dramatically high-class. The men in Kretschmer’s fantasy, however, seemed to come short in elegance, in comparison. Their looks were dressed-down, playing second violin in the women’s collection’s grand ballad. That said, the highly elaborate gowns, of embroidery juxtaposed with Japanese silk and fine wools, were certainly a majestic sight. Kretschmer was dreaming, and we were there with him.
